HAMILTON, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team ended a tough, four-match Mid-American Conference road swing on a successful note, rallying for a 4-3 victory over Miami University Saturday (April 5). The MAC dual match was held at the Riverside Racquet Club in Hamilton, Ohio.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in MAC action. The RedHawks drop to 8-9 and 3-2, respectively.
The host school got off to a quick start, taking two of three doubles matches to earn the point. For the Falcons, the lone doubles win came at the top flight, as junior co-captain Lisa Maloney and sophomore Susie Schoenberger teamed for a win over MU's Megan Zimpfer and Remy Swain, 8-6. The RedHawk team of Brooke Peyton and Nancy Wiegand won an 8-6 match, downing senior Alyson Gabel and junior Gaby Coello at the middle flight. And, the RedHawks also captured the third-flight doubles match to earn the point.
In singles action, however, the Falcons rallied to capture the match. Maloney posted a straight-sets win over Grace Cascarilla at the second flight, while Gabel, in her second season at BGSU after transferring from Miami, lost only four games in a third-flight win over Wiegand.
Coello also picked up a win in straight sets, topping Swain at the fourth flight. But, Miami's Zimpfer downed Schoenberger at the top flight, while Ilze Meyer bested sophomore Cameron Benjamin in their sixth-flight match.
BGSU freshman Heidi Romer, however, outlasted MU freshman Maura Trauernicht's bid for a come-from-behind win, taking the lone three-set match of the day and giving the Falcons the win.
The Falcons will return home for the final three matches of the regular season, beginning with a contest vs. Ball State on Saturday, April 12.
