Cleveland, Ohio - Three Bowling Green State University golfers were named to the Mid-American Conference All-Academic team, as voted on by league Faculty Athletic Representatives. Recognized for their performance in the classroom were men's golfer Craig Pickerel (RS-Sophomore/Genoa, Ohio), and women's golfers Shelley Binzel (Senior/Dublin, Ohio) and Jenny Schnipke (Junior/Kalida, Ohio).
Pickerel has a team-high 3.86 GPA and is majoring in architecture/environmental design studies. He was recently named the BGSU Junior Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The redshirt-sophomore had a 4.00 GPA in the fall semester. This is the first time he has been recognized by the league offices for his academics. Pickerel finished the 2002-03 season with a 74.896 average, tops among Falcons who played all 29 rounds. He also established a new school-record score of 208 for 54 holes at the Xavier Invitational, finishing third overall. Pickerel finished 38th at the 2003 MAC Championships.
Binzel has a team-high 3.75 GPA and is majoring in marketing. She finished with a new school-record season average of 78.35 through 23 rounds in 2002-03, and finished her career with a 79.66 average in 103 rounds, also a new school record. It marked the third year that Binzel has been recognized for her academic success by the league offices. Binzel is also a two-time National Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar. She was named to the All-MAC Second Team last week for the third time in her career after finishing tied for 15th at this year's MAC Championships.
Schnipke has a 3.50 GPA and is a pre-exercise specialist major. The junior was second on the team with a 79.17 average in 23 rounds for the 2002-03 season. Shnipke established a new school record for 36 holes when she shot a score of 145 in winning the Eastern Kentucky Invitational this past fall. In the same tournament, Schnipke tied a school record for 18 holes by carding a 70. This is the second time she has been recognized for her academic prowess by the league offices and she was also named an NGCA All-America Scholar last season. Schnipke finished tied for 26th at this year's MAC Championships.
This honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and JC transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
