BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Jody Johnson is the Bowling Green State University Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Johnson, a junior on the BGSU softball team, earned a complete-game win to help the Falcons clinch a Mid-American Conference Tournament berth.
Johnson, a native of LaGrange, Ohio, threw a complete-game five-hitter as the Falcons rallied for a 5-1 win over Eastern Michigan in the first game of Saturday's (May 3) doubleheader. BGSU, needing to sweep the three-game series to clinch a spot in the MAC Tournament, did just that with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
In her win, Johnson allowed one run and five hits in seven innings, walking four batters and striking out five. Johnson finished the regular season with a 5-5 record and an earned-run average of 2.63. In MAC games, she went 4-1 with an ERA of just 1.34.
In late April, Johnson was named the BGSU Female Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Johnson, a marketing major, has a 3.50 cumulative grade point average through the fall, 2002, semester.
The Falcons (25-24-1, 15-9 MAC), having qualified for the MAC Tournament for the fifth time in six years, will begin tournament play on Thursday (May 8). BGSU, the fifth seed for the six-team tournament, will face #4 Northern Illinois University in a 1:30 p.m. contest at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
