Falcon Comeback Falls Short

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Even though the Falcons dropped the opening two games versus Western Michigan the Bowling Green State University volleyball team was able to push the Broncos to a fifth and decisive set, falling just short of a comeback (23-30, 28-30, 30-17, 30-23, 12-15). Despite the loss BGSU had five players post double-digit kills for the first time this season.
In game one the Falcons got out to an early 6-3 lead, with back-to-back kills be junior Melissa Mohr. The Broncos answered with an 11-5 run to take a 14-13 lead. With Western Michigan leading 19-18, the Broncos posted their second 11-5 run to close out game one 30-23.
The teams exchanged leads, until game two was knotted at 13-13. Western Michigan forced a Bowling Green timeout with a 4-0 run to take a 17-13 lead. Coming out of the timeout, the Brown & Orange tied the game at 21-21 with an 8-4 run, capped off with two straight Taylor Twite kills. Following several lead changes, the score was tied at 28. A blocking error by the Falcons, followed by a Carmen Malone kill gave the Broncos a 30-28 game two victory.
The third game saw several lead changes before Shaylen Jackson posted one of her 10 kills on the night, to tie the score at 13. Senior Nadia Bedricky tallied back-to-back aces to give Bowling Green a 4-0 run and a 17-13 lead, forcing WMU to call a timeout. The Falcons posted a 5-2 run coming out of the time out, and finished game three off with an 8-2 run, capturing game three 30-17.
In game four, Western Michigan got off to a hot start with an 8-5 run to begin action. The Falcons were able to take the lead at 13-12 with an 8-4 run with five straight Western Michigan errors. The Falcons closed out game four 30-23, holding WMU to a .097 hitting percentage.
Bowling Green got behind early in the final game, with a 6-2 Western Michigan run. BGSU tied the game at 11-11 with a 9-5 run, lead by Samantha Rennau's four kills during the run. With the score tied at 12-12, Western Michigan scored the final three points of the match, dropping the Falcons record to 8-6, (0-1 MAC). The Broncos stand at 9-4, (2-0 MAC).
BGSU had five Falcons tally double-digit kills. Twite lead the way with 19, Rennau (14), Mohr (12), Bedricky (11) and Dana Chapman (10). The 12 kills by Mohr are a season-best and the 10 kills by Chapman are a career-best as a Falcon.
Junior Amber Mareski had a season-best 52 assists. She also had four kills and the lone solo block on the night for Bowling Green.
Four Falcons posted double-digit dig marks. Freshman Chrissy Gothke had a team leading 21, Rennau (13), Norris (12) and Bedricky (12). The 11 kills and 12 digs by Bedricky gave her, the second double-double of her season. The Falcons return to action on October 1, to face arch-rival Toledo at Savage Hall. The match is set for 7:00 p.m.

RENNAU TO THE RESCUE
The BGSU volleyball team needed someone to step-up their game with the graduation of Kristen Gamby, who ranks 10th all-time in BGSU history with 1,024 kills. Senior Samantha Rennau has answered that call. In 2002 Rennau had 51 total kills and a .102 hitting percentage, this past week alone Rennau had 32 kills and 25 digs. For the season she has a 175 kills and is averaging 3.37 kills per game. Both rank second on the team.
GOTHKE CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
The freshman libero, Chrissy Gothke, stepped into a tough situation taking over the libero position since early on in the season. For the season she is averaging a team-leading 4.07 digs per game, as well as averaged 4.67 digs per game over the weekend.
NORRIS CLOSES IN ON DIGS RECORD
Senior Susie Norris recorded her 1,000th kill of her career last month versus UMBC. She now has set her mark on the BGSU digs record. With 1,311 career digs, she is a mere 33 shy of the school record, held by Holli Costein with 1,344.
