Bowling Green, Ohio - Michigan State's Colton Fretter scored the game-winner at 14:27 of the third period to give the Spartans a 1-0 victory over Bowling Green on Friday night in CCHA action. Drew Miller assisted on the goal.
BGSU goalie Jordan Sigalet made a game-high 39 saves while MSU's Dominic Vicari earned the shutout with 34 saves. MSU had a 40-34 shot advantage in the game. Both teams were scoreless on the power play with MSU finishing 0-for3 and BGSU 0-for-4.
"It's a real tough game not to get any points," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "Both teams played extremely well and both goalies were outstanding.
"For the last four games we've had a lot of chances. There were two games where we had nine goals and back-to-back games where we don't have any. It wasn't the shooters making mistakes, it was the goalies making great saves. As the game wore on it had that overtime type of feeling. You knew the way the goalies were playing that if something found its way in the back of the net it was probably going to be the deciding-type of goal.
Paluch was happy with Sigalet's play in net. "He was really sharp and smothered a lot of pucks, and he made two or three outstanding saves. He was terrific tonight."
Despite being outshot for the game, the Falcons actually held a 15-12 advantage in the first period and 10-9 advantage in the third period.
BGSU drops to 5-12-6 overall and 3-9-3 in the CCHA, while MSU improves to 13-11-1 overall and 9-5-1 in league play. The two teams finish their two-game series on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 7:05 p.m. in the BGSU Ice Arena.
