BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's cross country team place five runners among the top 13 finishers to win the inaugural Falcon Invitational, held Saturday morning (Oct. 16) on the BGSU campus. The Falcon men, led by an individual title by sophomore Rogers Kipchumba, finished third as a team.
The BG women posted a total of 45 points to finish nine ahead of second-place Western Ontario. Youngstown State finished third with 70 points, followed by Central Michigan (84) and John Carroll (97). Cleveland State also competed in the women's meet, but did not have enough competitors to be included in the team scoring.
On the men's side, YSU had four of the top-eight finishers en route to a 34-point total and the team title. Western Ontario was second with 45 points, while the Falcons had 73. JCU rounded out the field with 77 points.
Kipchumba finished the men's 8,000-meter race in a time of 26:07, finishing two seconds ahead of John Carroll's Cyril Pinchak. Sophomore Edwin Cheruiyot was the second Falcon finisher, placing ninth among the 38 runners in a time of 27:03.
Other Falcon finishers included Bryan Jackson (21st; 28:06), Steve Vairetta (22nd; 28:11), Curtis Farnsel (28th; 28:52), Ryan Rohrer (29th; 29:08), Aaron Smuda (31st; 29:23), Steve Ferber (34th; 29:43), Will Elmore (35th; 29:46), Kevin Kaighin (36th; 29:55), Jeremy Hartley (37th; 31:27) and Aaron Hemmelgarn (38th; 33:27).
In the women's race, YSU's Emily Schnitkey was the individual winner, traversing the 5K course in 18:15. Schnitkey finished three seconds ahead of Western Ontario's Bethany Janzen.

Elise Gould was ninth in a time of 18:57, while Kim Settle (19:11) and Niki Suitor (19:12) were 12th and 13th, respectively.
Andrea Pollack (15th; 19:21), Christina Gingras (19th; 19:36), Stephanie Hillman (22nd; 19:40), Leslie Carden (34th; 20:37), Emily Jackson (36th; 21:00), Lyndi Springer (40th; 21:40), Angela Raizis (42nd; 22:01) and Ashley Tukes (43rd; 22:28) also competed for the Falcons on Saturday.
BGSU now turns its attention to the Mid-American Conference Championships, which will be held Oct. 30 in Toledo.
