Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green tied the game midway through the third period thanks to a Don Morrison goal and held on for a 2-2 tie against visiting Miami University on Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena.
After Jordan Sigalet made a save on a Miami slapshot, the puck went to the stick of freshman Ben Geelan who made a cross-ice pass to a streaking Morrison. With a man on him, Morrison fired a wrister from the top of the right circle that made its way top-shelf past goalie Brandon Crawford-West at 12:07 of the third period to knot the game, 2-2.
"It was a game, at least from our team's standpoint, that we were working to accomplish a lot but we couldn't get a lot going throughout the game," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "But I thought we did a good job of staying with the game and giving ourselves an opportunity at the end.
"It was that chess-match type of game until it really opened up late in the third period. Each goalie made some terrific saves. They (Sigalet and Crawford-West) made some great saves late in the third period."
Miami's Todd Grant scored first at 2:34 of the second period on the power-play with assists from Ryan Jones and Chris Busby. The Falcons answered just over a minute later when freshman Alex Foster scored his third goal of the season at 3:55 to tie the game, 1-1. Chris Pedota and Rich Meloche assisted.
However, MU's Jones gave the Redhawks the lead once again, 2-1, at 18:38 of the second period thanks to an Andy Greene assist.
Morrison's goal in the third period came on just BGSU's third shot of the period. Miami outshot the Falcons 11-7 in the second period and 13-8 in the third period. The Redhawks held a 31-22 shot advantage for the game.
"I thought it was really huge to get the point tonight because that point is going to make a big difference in the end of the year," said Sigalet. "To be down twice in the game and come back and tie it up was a big confidence booster for us."
Miami finished 1-for-6 on the power play while BGSU was scoreless on the power play (0-for-4) for just the second time all season and for the first time in eight games (vs. LSSU on Oct. 29).
Sigalet recorded his second career assist on Morrison's goal. BGSU improved to 4-2-2 when being outshot by its opponent this season and 0-3-2 when the opponent scores the first goal of the game. Meloche improved his current point streak to three games (3-2--5).
Sigalet was named the Perani Cup First Star of the game.
BGSU is now 6-3-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Miami is now 5-7-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the CCHA. The two teams end its two-game series on Saturday at the BGSU Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m.
