Bowling Green, Ohio - Northern Illinois scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning to defeat Bowling Green on Friday afternoon, 9-6, at Warren Steller Field. The three-run loss spoiled a valiant comeback by the Falcons in the ninth inning.
The top of the ninth saw the Huskies score a run to build a 6-4 lead over BGSU. Jeff Warnock then hit a pinch-hit single to left field to lead off the bottom of the ninth frame for the Falcons, but Kevin Longstreth grounded into a double play. Steve Raszka then smacked a pinch-hit single to left field, as did Josh Stewart, to put runners on first and second with two outs. Eric Lawson singled to right field, scoring Raszka, and then David Barkholz singled home Stewart to knot the game at 6-6 and send it to extra innings.
Nolan Reimold led off the 10th inning with a double, but was stranded there. NIU took advantage of the opportunity by scoring three runs in the top of the 11th inning, two coming off of a single by Greg Larsen and one via a single by Scott Simon. BGSU was retired in order in the bottom of the 11th inning.
NIU took the early lead with a run in the first inning and built it to 2-0 with another run in the fourth inning. BGSU cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to throwing error by the third baseman which scored Barkholz from third base.
The Falcons took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning when Reimold hit his third home run of the week, a two-run blast off of the scoreboard in right field. Barkholz was on base after an infield single.
Larsen then hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to give the Huskies a 5-3 lead. Again BGSU cut into the deficit with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Kevin Longstreth led off with a double to left-centerfield and Lawson brought him home with a double of his own to left field, cutting the NIU lead to 5-4.
Reimold finished 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Lawson and Barkholz each had two hits.
Tyler Saneholtz tied a career-high with nine strikeouts, but allowed five runs on five hits in 6.1 innings pitched. Matt Hundley pitched two innings of relief, allowing just one run on one hit with two strikeouts, while Neil Schmitz (3-1) pitched 2.2 innings and gave up three runs on six hits to suffer his first loss of the season.
NIU's Trevor Wolhgemuth (2-2) earned the victory by pitching the final 2.1 innings and allowing just one hit and no runs with four strikeouts.
BGSU drops to 18-8 overall and 5-5 in the Mid-American Conference. NIU improves to 17-16 overall and 4-3 in the MAC. The two teams meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Warren Steller Field.
