Cardinals' Comeback Downs Falcons, 4-3

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Bowling Green State University tennis team won the doubles point, but host Ball State University captured four of the six singles matches to claim the overall victory, 4-3, Saturday afternoon (April 17). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
With the win, BSU improved to 11-8 overall and 5-4 in MAC play, and the Cardinals clinched the fifth seed for the upcoming MAC Championships. The Falcons fell to 9-13 and 3-6, respectively, and BGSU will be seeded seventh for the league championships.
The Falcons won the doubles points to begin the day. BGSU's top-flight team of senior Lisa Maloney and junior Susie Schoenberger won a tiebreaker to defeat Melissa Roach and Katie Owens. The BGSU third-flight team of senior Gaby Coello and sophomore Andrea Meister picked up an 8-4 win to give BG the initial point of the match.
Ball State's lone doubles win came at the middle level, where Jill Wieman and Jessica Thompson were victorious over sophomore Heidi Romer and freshman Ashley Jakupcin.
In singles play, Schoenberger topped Jenny Batty in straight sets at the second flight, while Jakupcin rallied back from a first-set loss to top Owens in three sets at the fourth flight. But, the Cardinals took each of the other four matches.
Roach downed Maloney in their top-flight match, while Wieman needed three sets to defeat Coello at the third level. Thompson and Susan Kelley also picked up singles wins for the hosts, at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
The Falcons now prepare for the MAC Championships, which will be hosted by Northern Illinois. BGSU, as mentioned, will be the seventh seed for the 10-team tournament, which will be held at the Rockford Park District Courts at the Guilford Tennis Center from Thursday through Sunday (April 22-25). The Falcons will play a 10:00 a.m. match Thursday, against 10th-seeded Akron.
