Broncos Down Falcons, 4-0; Eliminate BGSU From MAC Championships

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Western Michigan University won the doubles point, then captured a trio of singles matches to post a 4-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday morning (April 23) in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-American Conference Championships. The match was held at the Rockford Park District Courts/Clock Tower Resort.
With the victory, the second-seeded Broncos improve to 16-8 in dual-match play, and advance to the semifinals to face the winner of the match between #3 Eastern Michigan and #6 Northern Illinois. The Falcons, the tourney's seventh seed, see the season come to an end with a 10-14 record.
In doubles play, WMU's top team of Frederika Girsang and Valeria Stoilova posted a victory over BGSU's tandem of senior co-captain Lisa Maloney and junior Susie Schoenberger. Sophomore Heidi Romer and freshman Ashley Jakupcin fell to the WMU duo of Malena Remynse and Rattiya Hiranrat in second-flight action.

In singles play, Girsang picked up a win over Maloney at the top flight, and the Broncos moved on with a pair of victories at the bottom of the lineup. Hiranrat downed Romer at the fifth flight, while Remynse topped junior Cameron Benjamin at the sixth level.
Schoenberger (flight number two), Coello (three) and Jakupcin (four) also were competing in singles for the Falcons, with Coello in the midst of a third set vs. WMU's Reedhina Parekh when play was stopped.
Head coach Penny Dean's 2003-04 squad had three seniors -- Maloney, Coello and Jessica Johnson -- on the 10-woman roster.
