Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University men's golf coach Garry Winger will serve as the honorary chair of the 2004 Canadian Optimist Junior Golf National Championships, to be held August 16-18 at the Ingersoll Golf and Country Club in Ingersoll, Ontario.
Winger follows touring PGA professionals Ian Leggatt (2003) and Mike Weir (2002) as recent honorary chairs and Optimist Golf Alumni. The London, Ontario native played his first Optimist tournament at age 10 and competed in the Optimist junior golf tournaments into his high school years.
The tournament, in its 13th year, is open to 240 boys and girls 18 years of age and under. Juniors participate from Quebec west to British Columbia in Canada, as well as Montana and Wyoming. U.S. Juniors must qualify to advance to the COJGNC
Winger is set to begin his seventh year as head men's golf coach and assistant director of golf at BGSU. Winger was a four-year (1991-94) letterwinner at BGSU and helped the Falcons to a third-place Mid-American Conference finish in 1994, the best by the program in 10 years. He finished third individually and earned All-MAC honors that season. Winger was also named the recipient of the 1994 MAC Sportsmanship Award, which was voted on by the players.
After graduation, he was a member of a six-man Canadian team that competed in Wellington, New Zealand against New Zealand, Australia and Japan. Winger also played on the Canadian Tour on a full-time basis in 1997, after playing in six events in 1996. He won five professional tournaments in his career, which included wins on the Tommy Armour Tour and the Cleveland Tour in Orlando, Florida.
