BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Laura Kokinda and sophomore Ashley Jakupcin each captured a singles flight championship as the Bowling Green State University tennis team completed play in the BGSU Invitational Sunday afternoon (Sept. 26). The two-day, five-team event was held at Keefe Courts. No team scores were kept.
Kokinda teamed with junior Andrea Meister to win a doubles title at the invite, which included Buffalo, Ferris State, Indiana State, Xavier and the host Falcons.
Senior Susie Schoenberger and freshman Jenna Nussbaum posted runner-up finishes in their singles flights, while the team of Jakupcin and senior Cameron Benjamin finished second in doubles play.
"I am pleased with our performance in the first tournament of the season," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "Ashley (Jakupcin) and Laura (Kokinda) played very well on the way to their championships, but I saw some good things from every player on the team this weekend."
At the top singles flight, Schoenberger took UB's Andreea Novaceanu to a third set in the championship match before succumbing. Jakupcin, who had won a pair of round-robin matches in straight sets at the second flight on Saturday, again did not lose a set in her championship-match win over XU's Stephanie Bauer.
Junior Heidi Romer also competed at the second level, and lost just three total games in downing ISU's Magda Narczewska in the third-place match.
Freshman Andrea Volle also posted a third-place finish, with a straight-sets victory over ISU's Marie Caujolle on Sunday. At the fourth flight, Benjamin picked up a win on Sunday afternoon, while Meister suffered a loss. The two Falcons originally had been slated to play in the third-place match; however, the pairings were altered in each flight in which teammates were scheduled to face off on Sunday.
In the fifth flight, Nussbaum advanced to the final in her first collegiate weekend of action, before falling to XU's Jackie Vilines. Sophomore Erika Wolfe bounced back after dropping two Saturday contests, picking up a win over UB's Jamie Jackson on Sunday.
Kokinda, who missed much of the 2003-04 season due to injury, got off to a great start in '04-05. She outlasted XU's Alicia Papa in a three-set championship match on Sunday afternoon to cap a 3-0 weekend in singles.
In doubles action, the Romer/Schoenberger team had dropped its opening match on Saturday, but rebounded with a pair of wins, including one in the third-place match. At the second level, Benjamin and Jakupcin won a pair of matches before falling to UB's Novaceanu/Jacobs duo in the final by a narrow 9-7 result.
Frosh Volle and Nussbaum also competed in that flight, picking up an 8-3 win in Sunday's fifth-place match.
Kokinda and Meister posted a convincing 8-2 win over their Buffalo foes in the championship match of the third doubles flight, capping off a perfect 6-0 weekend for Kokinda. Wolfe competed with XU's Sarah Potts in doubles, and the pair picked up third place at the third flight.
Xavier, like BGSU, picked up two singles titles and one doubles crown in the invitational, while Buffalo had one singles and one doubles championship. Indiana State picked up the other singles title.
The Falcons are back in action next weekend, heading to Ann Arbor for Michigan's Wolverine Fall Invitational from Friday through Sunday (Oct. 1-3).
