Marquette, Mich. - After fighting back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game, Bowling Green allowed two goals in the final six minutes of the game to drop a 4-2 decision at Northern Michigan on Saturday night. The Falcons had battled back to knot the game at 2-2 within the first 3:40 of the third period.
BGSU's Michael Hodgson cut the deficit to 2-1 when he knocked in a loose puck near the crease just 57 seconds into the third period. Jonathan Matsumoto and Mike Falk assisted on the goal. Then with a 5-on-3 advantage, Matsumoto fed Ryan Minnabarriet on the left-side of the crease, who then buried the puck and tied the score, 2-2, at 3:40 in the third period. Jonathan Sigalet also garnered an assist on the play.
A Mike Santorelli goal at 5:36 of the first period and a Jamie Milam power-play goal at 9:19 of the second period had given the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. NMU's final two goals of the game came within 1:12 minutes of each other in the third period. Pat Bateman scored the game-winner on the power play at 14:08 of the third period and Dirk Southern added an insurance goal on the NMU power play at 15:20 for the final 4-2 verdict.
NMU finished 3-for-9 on the power play while BGSU was 1-for-6. The Falcons held a slim 31-30 shot advantage for the game, including 14-13 in the third period. Jordan Sigalet stopped 26 of 30 shots faced while Tuomas Tarkki stopped 29 of 31 shots he faced.
The loss drops BGSU to 10-9-3 overall and 7-7-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. BGSU dropped two places this weekend, from fourth place to sixth place in the CCHA. NMU now sits in third place with a league record of 10-5-3 and 12-7-5 overall.
