AKRON, Ohio - Normally when a player makes his first collegiate start he is has a few butterfly's to shake before getting the feel for the game, redshirt freshman keeper, Brent Petkus was not afforded that luxury and was tested against the top-ranked Akron Zips who are averaging nearly four goals per match.
"Brent is a great shot stopper and organizes the defense well," said coach Fred Thompson of Petkus' play. "We thought he played well in his half at Buffalo and could handle the entire Akron game." In his first 90 minute set, Petkus finished the day with seven saves, despite allowing three goals on 19 shots.
BGSU's defense was the first team in the past four games to hold the Zips silent in the first half.
Although the Falcons were unable to repeat their remarkable Sept. 23 upset over then No.11 Ohio State, to date, the Falcons are 1-2 against nationally ranked teams. In each of the three games, the Falcons defenders have yet to allow a goal in the first half.
Akron's offense, led by the National Player of the Week Ross McKenzie, found three BGSU defensive breakdowns and held the 3-0 advantage to remain undefeated.
The Orange and Brown fell to 2-11-1 overall and are 0-4-0 in conference play, while Akron remains perfect in the MAC (3-0-0) and advances to a 12-0-1 overall record.
The Falcons will take a detour from MAC action to host in-state challenger University of Cincinnati. The Wednesday match with the Bearcats will kick-off at 3:00 at Cochrane Field.
