Columbus, Ohio - It was deju vu for Bowling Green on Saturday night as #7 Ohio State jumped out to a 3-0 lead just to end up holding off a late Falcon rally and winning, 3-2, in front of 11,570 at Value City Arena.
Matt Beaudoin (2:46) scored a power-play goal and Tyson Strachan (14:37) scored on a breakway in the first period for an early 2-0 OSU lead. A Kyle Hood PPG at 5:02 of the second period gave the home team a 3-0 lead, just as it had in Friday night's victory.
And just like Friday night, the Falcons came charging back. Freshman Alex Foster scored at 12:57 of the second period to cut the deficit to 3-1 with assists by Jonathan Matsumoto and Jon Sitko. Then Matsumoto scored BGSU's first power-play goal of the weekend at 8:27 of the third period to bring the Falcons to within one, 3-2. Mike Falk and Mike Nesdill assisted. It was Nesdill's first collegiate point in just his fourth career game at BGSU.
Despite goalie Jordan Sigalet keeping the Falcons in the game with 21 saves over the final two periods, BGSU wasn't able to tally the game-tying goal, falling to 2-11-0 in Value City Arena.
"It was a very similar game to last night," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "Both goaliew, again, were terrific. Jordan, again, gave us a tremendous opportunity at the end to give a chance to get a point.
"You can't come in here and expect to fall behind by three goals and think that's the best way to earn points here. We did a lot of things necessary to give us a chance to get a point, but their special teams were the difference in the game."
OSU was 2-for-7 on the power play and killed off seven of BGSU's eight power plays, including three 5-on-3 advantages for the Falcons.
OSU finished with a 38-28 shot advantage. Sigalet stopped 35 shots while OSU's David Caruso stopped 26 shots.
BGSU falls to 13-11-4 overall and 10-9-3 in the CCHA. It still sits in fifth place, two points behind Nebraska-Omaha who lost 4-3 to Michigan on Saturday night.
The Falcons host Western Michigan next weekend (Feb. 18-19) at the BGSU Ice Arena. It is "MS Awareness Weekend at the Ice Arena" with MS Prism Pins and Bands of Hope bracelets being available via donation. All proceeds will benefit the MS Society. Also, the hockey team will hold its annual "Skate With the Falcons" on Sunday, Feb. 20, at the BGSU Ice Arena from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Cost is $6 per individual with kids who attend wearing a youth hockey jersey getting in for $5.
