MILWAUKEE, Wis. - In a match that could not have been much closer, host Marquette University squeaked past the Bowling Green State University tennis team, 4-3, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 20). The non-conference dual match was held at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 3-5 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 6-4 in dual-match play.
All three doubles matches were close, with the Golden Eagles taking two of the three matches to capture the doubles point. That point would prove to be crucial.
In doubles, the biggest 'blowout' was an 8-5 outcome at the top flight, with MU victorious. At the middle flight, sophomore Ashley Jakupcin and freshman Jenna Nussbaum dropped a narrow 9-7 decision to their Golden Eagle foes.
Senior Cameron Benjamin and junior Andrea Meister were winners at the third flight, 8-6, but as mentioned, the Golden Eagles took the doubles point to hold a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In those singles matches, the Falcons got wins from senior Susie Schoenberger and Jakupcin at the top-two flights, by identical scores. Both players lost a total of only four games at Schoenberger downed Callan Smith at the top flight, and Jakupcin took care of Maria Calbeto at flight number two.
Benjamin, in the lone three-set match of the day, downed Dominika Dabrowski at the sixth flight. But, the Golden Eagles won three singles matches to pick up the overall win.
The Falcons now return home for the next eight matches, beginning with a Friday (Feb. 25) contest vs. Cincinnati. That match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
