CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University junior Lindsay Heimrich has been named a Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon (March 14). Heimrich earns the honor for the first time this season.
Heimrich is the second Falcon pitcher to earn the league honor this year. Classmate Liz Vrabel was named the MAC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 28.
Monday's honor was Heimrich's first as a pitcher, but she has been named Player of the Week on two occasions, once each as a freshman (March 18, 2003) and a sophomore (April 12, 2004).
Heimrich, a native of Waterville, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS), had a 3-1 record and an earned-run average of 1.20 in the circle, picking up all three of BGSU's wins at last weekend's Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.
Heimrich allowed opponents to hit just .157 against her. She made four appearances, suffering her only loss against North Carolina State on Thursday (March 10). Heimrich allowed three earned runs in two-plus innings of that game.
In her final three games on the weekend, however, Heimrich was nothing short of stellar, throwing a complete-game two-hitter and a pair of three-hitters. She allowed just three hits in a 2-0 shutout win over Minnesota on Friday (March 11).
Then, on Saturday, Heimrich again went seven innings and allowed only three hits, as the Falcons beat New Mexico State, 6-1. Sunday afternoon, she gave up only two hits while striking out five batters in another shutout win. This time, the opponent was Pacific, a team receiving votes in the national polls, as the Falcons picked up a 2-0 win.
In her last three games of the weekend, Heimrich was 3-0 with a miniscule ERA of 0.33, and an opponent batting average of only .114.
At the plate, Heimrich hit .348 in the Falcons' seven games in Vegas. She had at least one hit in six of the seven games, and had two-hit games vs. both Pacific and #1 Arizona. Against the top team in the land, Heimrich had a double and a single in three trips to the plate.
Heimrich leads the Falcons in both hitting (.314 batting average) and pitching (three wins, 2.23 ERA) categories this year to date.
Heimrich was named the league pitcher of the week for the West Division. Katie Pilger of Ball State was the division's player of the week, while Akron's Sara Zilles and Tina McCauley earned player- and pitcher-of-the-week honors, respectively, for the East Division.
The Falcons, 4-13 on the year, return to action this weekend with a trip to Charlottesville, Va. BGSU will compete in the Hoo's Who Tournament, hosted by the University of Virginia, Friday through Sunday (March 18-20). BGSU will take on Toledo, East Carolina and Rutgers, in addition to the host Cavaliers.
