Falcons Threaten Late, Fall Short Of Matching UMass’ Five-Run Fourth
April 17, 2026 | Baseball
BGSU, UMass Now Set For Noon Doubleheader Saturday After Schedule Change
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Anthony Mitta logged the first hit of the day with a single into center field to begin the second inning. A walk to TJ Takats and a single up the middle by Griffin Scheiderer loaded the bases, but the Falcons weren't able to get a run across in the frame.
- The first run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth with UMass scoring on a sacrifice fly. The sacrifice fly sparked a five-run inning for the Minutemen, giving them a 5-0 lead through four innings.
- The Falcons answered in the top of the fifth. With one out, Scheiderer was hit by a pitch before a Lance Vickers single to right center put runners at the corners. Carter Mottice was able to drop a single into shallow left field, scoring Scheiderer to put BGSU on the board, 5-1.
- A fielder's choice off the bat of Andrew DiLodovico again put runners at the corners for the Falcons. Brayden Curlis stepped up with a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Vickers. Mitta kept it going by legging out an infield single to the first baseman, bringing home DiLodovico for a 5-3 score.
- Pauly Mancino was hit by a pitch to begin the top of the eighth. A single into left field from Takats put two on for BGSU with both moving up on a Zack Horky sacrifice bunt. A fly out to deep right field from Scheiderer was enough to score Mancino, cutting the deficit down to one, 5-4.
