Cleveland, Ohio - Sophomore Josh Stewart drove in Nolan Reimold for what proved to be the game-winning run in the sixth inning, leading Bowling Green to a 3-1 victory at Cleveland State on Wednesday afternoon.
In the sixth inning, Reimold reached base with one out on a fielding error by the pitcher. Andy Hudak singled to right field, moving Reimold to third base, before Stewart lined a single to right field for the go-ahead run, 2-1.
CSU had tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning. John Clyde reached on a walk issued by Brett Browning then moved to second base on a wild pitch. Then Brett Chinn grounded out to Tyler Wasserman at third base, allowing Clyde to move to third. However, Hudak tried to throw Clyde out at third base, resulting on an error and Clyde scoring the game-tying run.
Despite the unearned run given up, Browning (1-0) picked up his first collegiate victory, pitching two innings and allowing no hits and two walks.
BGSU added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning when Reimold received a lead-off walk, moved to third on a Hudak single, and scored on a double-play ball hit by Stewart.
After Burke Badenhop and Nick Cantrell pitched scoreless innings, senior Matt Hundley pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season. Greg Becker got the start for the Falcons, pitching three innings of scoreless baseball with three hits allowed and three strikeouts.
The Falcons got on the board in the third inning Kevin Longstreth hit a one-out double and two batters later Jeff Warnock singled him home.
BGSU held a 8-5 advantage in hits for the game and improve to 14-6 overall. CSU drops to 3-10. The game was CSU's home opener at Forest Hill Park.
The Falcons return home this weekend (April 1-3) and host Mid-American Conference foe Central Michigan University at Warren Steller Field. Friday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m. while Saturday's and Sunday's contests are 1 p.m. starts.
