CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University freshman Emily Gouge has been named a Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday (April 11). Gouge earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Gouge is the third different Falcon to earn Pitcher-of-the-Week laurels this season. Junior Liz Vrabel garnered the award on Feb. 28, and also earned last week's (April 4) honor, while classmate Lindsay Heimrich was named the Pitcher of the Week on March 14.
Gouge, a native of Vero Beach, Fla. (Vero Beach HS), had a record of 3-0 and a microscopic earned-run average of 0.30 last week. In MAC play, she was 1-0 with an ERA of 0.00, going 10 innings without allowing a run vs. league foes.
Overall, she entered Monday's doubleheader at Oakland having not allowed a run over her last 16 1/3 innings. Gouge began the week by picking up a complete-game win at Valparaiso last Monday (April 4), allowing only five hits and a seventh-inning run in a 5-1 BG victory.
Two days later, Gouge threw three perfect innings of relief against Miami. On Saturday (April 9), she threw her first collegiate shutout, allowing only four hits in a win at Ball State.
The next day, Gouge surrendered only two hits in another complete-game shutout win, this time over IPFW. In that win, she struck out a career-high eight batters.
After making seven appearances, totaling 27 innings, prior to last week, Gouge threw 23 innings over four games on the week. Opponents hit only .141 against her, including just .121 in the two MAC games.
On the year, Gouge is now 5-2 after winning Monday's opening game at Oakland, and she has won her last five decisions, lowering her seasonal ERA over a run-and-a-half in the last eight days, to 1.72.
Gouge was named the league pitcher of the week for the West Division. Amy Hudson of Central Michigan was the division's player of the week, while Marshall's Amanda Williams and Randi Nielson earned player- and pitcher-of-the-week honors, respectively, for the East Division.
The Falcons, now 19-20 on the year after Monday's sweep at OU, head to Akron for a Wednesday doubleheader.
