DeKalb, Ill. - Sophomore Alan Brech struck out a career-high 10 and allowed just six baserunners in eight innings of work as Bowling Green downed Northern Illinois, 5-1, in DeKalb, Ill., on Friday afternoon. Three Falcons had multiple hits while five different players drove in a run apiece.
Brech (5-1) picked up his fourth consecutive win in as many starts to help BGSU improve to 21-9 overall and 6-4 in the Mid-American Conference.
Andy Hudak and Steve Raszka each had RBI-singles in the first inning to give the visiting Falcons a 2-0 lead. Josh Stewart then had an RBI-single in the second inning for a 3-0 Falcon advantage.
NIU (8-20, 0-7 MAC) closed the gap to 3-1 in the fourth inning, but that would be as close as the Huskies would get.
Josh Dietz had an RBI-single and Tyler Wasserman laid down a suicide squeeze bunt that plated a run in the eighth inning to give the Falcons a 5-1 edge.
Senior Matt Hundley pitched the ninth inning, allowing just one hit.
BGSU held a 10-6 advantage in hits with Stewart, Raszka, and Nolan Reimold each collecting a pair of hits.
The two teams continue their three-game set in DeKalb on Saturday at 2 p.m. EST, 1 p.m. Central.
