EVANSVILLE, Ind. - While it was the home opening weekend for the University of Evansville, it was homecoming for head coach Fred Thompson whoes Falcons were defeated by the Purple Aces 2-1.
"It was strange to coach against the Aces, but it was a lot of fun to see the University of Evansville's Administration," said Thompson of the atmosphere.
Both the Falcons and Aces came into today's competition with a 0-2-1 record and had suffered recent shutouts in Friday's action. "Evansville had some good possessions against Memphis," said Thompson on the 5-0 shutout. "They brought that energy today and refused to be stopped today."
Bowling Green's Gregory Hennelly was the first to light the scoreboard 4:59 in the match at Black Beauty Field on a 25 yard direct kick. Hennelly's goal was his first of the season and his third career as a Falcon.
Evansville tied the game at 1-1 after freshman keeper Paul Shoemaker deflected a Cory Elenio shot but was unable to recover quickly enough to deflect the rebound from Cory Binder at 19:23. Shoemaker finished the match with six saves on eight shots on goal.
Since Thompson had been removed from Evansville for only one full season, he was well aware of the style of play the Aces would compete with. "I pretty much knew what to expect," said Thompson. "The second goal was scored just as I had diagramed it for our guys."
The game winner came when Binder, who has three of Evansville's four season goals, scored again on a corner kick from Jason Pele to Garric Henry. Henry's header found Binder who waited undefended.
The Orange and Brown will take a mid-week trip, Wednesday, Sept. 14, to Cincinnati to take on Xavier University of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The match-up will begin at 7:00 p.m.
