BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons were swept 3-0 in the conference opener against Toledo Friday night. Junior Chrissy Gothke and freshman Meghan Mohr paced the Falcons in kills with eight apiece in the losing effort. Sophomore Maggie Karges played a big role in holding the Rockets to a .133 hitting percentage with her team-leading 20 digs.
Game one was a see-saw battle until three consecutive kills by Rocket senior Kelsey Culver forced the Falcons to call a timeout trailing 21-18. The Falcon timeout proved to be beneficial as the Brown and Orange stormed back to a 24-24 tie before forcing Toledo to take a timeout of their own. Following the Falcons second timeout, the Rockets responded this time, lighting the scoreboard twice in a row to take a 30-28 game one victory. Mohr led the Falcons with four kills.
Mohr topped the Falcon attack with four kills in game two as well. Unfortunately, the outcome was also the same with the Falcons falling short 30-26. Redshirt freshman Kendra Halm was called on to start game two and responded with three kills, three digs, a block and a service ace.
Coming out of the locker room, BGSU fell victim to a 14-8 deficit. Undaunted, the Brown and Orange trimmed the deficit to a lone point, 20-19. The Falcons continued to fight back, stringing together groups of points destroying several Rocket leads. However, Bowling Green could not overcome the final disadvantage, dropping game three 30-26.
The Falcons look to get back on track Saturday night as they travel to Muncie, Indiana to take on the Cardinals of Ball State. BGSU and the defending MAC West champs will begin the match at 8 p.m.
