Falcons Tie Zips at Cooper Pool

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - In their first Mid-American Conference meet of the New Year, the Bowing Green State University swimming and diving program tied the visiting Zips of Akron University. Each squad earned eight first place finishes and a final score of 150 points in the dual meet at Cooper Pool.
Making the largest splash for the Falcons were Stephanie Buckner, Caroline Keating and Alisha Yee. Each swimmer earned two first place finishes in two separate events.
Buckner, the defending MAC 100 Free Champion, not only took first in the event, but also beat fellow senior Jessica Guinness by one-hundredth of a second to capture a dramatic top finish in the 50 Free. Buckner finished in 24.89 while Guinness finished at 24.90. Guinness would go on to finish third in the 200 free.
Keating, the BGSU school record holder, sunk all competitors in the 500 Free. Keating's closest competition finished nearly 14 seconds after the Falcon. The Cincinnatti native began the meet with a first place finish in the 200 Free.
Yee, a first-year Falcon, combined with fellow newcomer Sami Jordan to pack a one-two punch for the Orange and Brown. The pair swept the sprint Backstroke events finishing first and second, respectively, in both the 100 and 200 Back. Yee also took home a second place finish in the 400 IM where she fell to Akron's Danielle Beland by less than an second.
Sophomore Traci Eversoll had a spectacular day in the 1650 Free with her second place finish, the highest of the season, behind veteran Kara Ohngren in the first solo event of the day.
Off the boards, freshman Ashley Belrose placed third on the 1-meter board and sophomore captain Jill Auer found the same result in the 3-meter diving event.
Other Falcon notables include two second place finishes by Dana Schultz in the sprint Butterfly events and a string of top three finishes by Jen Wright, Michael Carriaga and Kim Albin. In addition, as a unit BGSU placed swimmers in the Top Three in 14 of the 16 events.
Next up for the squad will be a trip to Buffalo, N.Y. for a MAC dual meet January 27. The contest with the Bulls will begin at 5:00 p.m. and will be the final road test before the Falcons compete in the MAC Championships February 23-25.
