BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - Nick Dials made two free throws and Rob Preston hit a layup in overtime to lead Akron to a 77-72 victory over Bowling Green on Sunday.
After the Falcons' Steven Wright forced the overtime with a free throw with 38 seconds left in regulation, the Zips (15-4, 8-1 Mid-American Conference) built a five-point lead on Dials' two free throws with 1:16 left and a layup by Preston with 21 seconds remaining.
Wright, who scored 21 points for Bowling Green (8-11, 4-5) hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 74-72 before Cedrick Middleton made two foul shots and Dru Joyce hit one in the final 7 seconds.
Reserve Darryl Peterson led the Zips with 18 points, with Romeo Travis adding 16, Dials 13 and Middleton 11.
Martin Samarco scored 26 points and Matt Lefeld had 12 for the Falcons.
Akron hit 22-of-32 free throws to Bowling Green's 17-of-26.
The Zips led 37-23 at hafltime and built a 19-point advantage, 49-30 with 13:21 left in the game. BGSU took its first lead of the game at 63-62 with 4:26 to go an a layup by Brian Moten.
BGSU also led 66-64 with 2:11 to go when Samarco banked in a three-pointer from the left corner. Dials gave the lead back to Akron on a triple 20 seconds later.
Nearly mirroring last year's 71-69 win over BGSU last year, the Zips Nate Linhart missed a runner with three seconds to go that would have given Akron the win in regulation
