CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Bowling Green State University hockey team suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday night to the #1 Boston College Eagles, 5-1. With the loss the Falcons fall to 2-1-1 on the year. The Eagles improve to 2-1-0.
Boston College opened the scoring at the 11:54 mark of the first with a power-play goal by Brian Boyle. The man-advantage tally was the Falcons first power-play goal allowed of the season, snapping a 16-for-16 streak.
The Eagles extended their lead three minutes later after Benn Ferriero recorded his first goal of the season.
Bowling Green (2-1-1) answered back with just five seconds remaining in the opening period with the help of Derek Whitmore's fifth goal of the year. Jonathan Matsumoto cleared the puck out of the Falcons' zone with a great pass to freshman Tomas Petruska. Petruska fired the puck in on Cory Schnieder, who deflected the shot into the corner. Whitmore chased the rebound down and threw it at the net to get the Falcons to within one, 2-1.
The Eagles added one second and two third period goals to stretch the lead to 5-1, the eventual final score.
BC held a 43-26 shot advantage with Jimmy Spratt recording a career-high 38 saves in the loss. BC's Schnieder stopped 25-of-26 BGSU shots to pick up the victory.
Up next for the Falcons is a trip to Oxford, Ohio for a pair of contests with the Redhawks of Miami on Oct. 27-28. Friday's contest starts at 7:35 p.m., while Saturday's starts at 7:05 p.m.
