AKRON, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team took the fifth game of their five-game road trip, sweeping Akron 30-11, 30-24, 30-19. The Falcons improve to 21-2 overall and 10-0 in conference play, extending their current win streak to 17 consecutive matches.
Junior Stephanie Swiger belted a team-high 18 kills while hitting .654 with four blocks against the Zips. Sophomore Chelsey Meek excelled defensively, recording 15 digs. Bowling Green out-hit Akron .371 to .028.
BGSU set the tempo right away with a 30-11 decision in game one. Swiger's six kills led the Falcons to a .542 hitting percentage in the opening act. Bowling Green suffocated the Zips, forcing a -.100 hitting percentage for Akron.
Swiger hammered home six more kills in the second stanza. The outcome of game two remained in question as late as 17-17. However, the Brown and Orange then answered that question with an eight-point run to grab a 25-17 lead. BGSU eventually took a 30-24 decision.
Bowling Green came out of the locker room with all the momentum still intact, strolling to a 30-19 game three win. Swiger was as consistent as it gets, swatting six kills in game three as well.
The weekend sweep sets up a battle between the top two teams in the Mid-American Conference next Friday (Oct. 27) at 7 PM when Bowling Green welcomes the #21 Ohio Bobcats to Anderson Arena. Both teams sit at a perfect 10-0 in the conference.
