BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The 2006 Falcons sketched their name in the BGSU record books Saturday afternoon during a dominated performance against Buffalo. The Falcons broke not one, but two records in the sweep. The victory extends Bowling Green's current win streak to 12 matches, a new all-time high. The Brown and Orange also excelled with an all-time best .512 hitting percentage for the match.
The key to the Falcons offensive explosion was a balanced attack that resulted in all six starters recording six or more kills in the lopsided victory.
Bowling Green took a 4-0 lead to begin the match and never looked back. Junior Corrie Mills and Senior Chrissy Gothke each swung a perfect 4-for-4 in the opening act. As a team, BGSU hit at a .484 pace in the 30-14 triumph. Gothke recorded her first of three service aces on the day to end the game.
As if the Bowling Green's .484 hitting percentage in game one wasn't impressive enough, the Falcons one-upped themselves with a booming .607 hitting pace in the second stanza. However, UB kept it close through the first portion of the game, trailing by a lone point at 9-8. BGSU then constucted a 10-2 run to bury the Bulls, eventually taking a 30-18 decision. Mills picked up five more kills on just six attempts in game two, giving her nine kills on ten attempts (.900) heading into the locker room.
The ship continued to sail in game three as the Falcons held UB to a -.111 hitting percentage in a 30-12 drubbing. A kill by Sophomore Kendra Halm ended the match, handing BGSU the two new records. Halm-kills served as bookends in the match as she began the match with a termination and ended it with one as well.
Bowling Green will pack their bags and travel north to take on Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan next weekend. The Falcons will begin the weekend with a Friday night match against the Chippewas at 7 PM.
Quotes from Head Coach Denise Van De Walle
"I thought we played great today. Everyone looked good. Offensively we played pretty fast. I thought our defensive transition game was really good. I thought Chrissy (Gothke) spread the ball around well. We had a very balanced attack with everyone putting up big numbers. You don't hit over .500 with just one person playing well."
"The team is excited about setting two new school records for consecutive wins and highest team hitting efficiency. We're playing good volleyball right now. This is a fun team to watch and coach. We're physical at the net and quick in the back court."
"It was great to be at home this weekend. Parents Day is always fun for us. Now we focus on Central and Eastern, two teams that we always battle hard at their house."
