SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Bowling Green State University hockey team out-shot #9 Notre Dame, but were unable to solve ND's David Brown, as the Falcons were shutout 4-0 on Saturday night in South Bend, Indiana.
"I thought we did some good things, but they (Notre Dame) are a veteran, confident team right now," said BGSU head coach Scott Paluch. "We have to score goals and we have to play a real good game to beat them. We played well, we just weren't good enough to win this type of game."
Notre Dame (8-1-1, 3-0-1) got two goals in the first 11 minutes of the contest to take an early 2-0 lead, but the Falcons seemed to settle down following the Irish second goal. BGSU out-shot Notre Dame the final nine minutes of the opening period as both teams finished the opening 20 minutes with nine shots apiece.
Matsumoto nearly cut that lead in half at the buzzer of the first period, but after the goal was reviewed, the video replay showed that it was no goal.
The Irish stretched their lead to 3-0 midway through the second period on Mark Van Guilder's eighth goal of the season.
Notre Dame added one final goal at the 11:43 mark of the third to push the lead to 4-0, the eventual final score.
BGSU (3-6-1, 1-5-0) held a 28-26 shot advantage on the night. Notre Dame went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Falcons were held scoreless on six attempts.
Up next for the Orange and Brown is a weekend (Nov. 17-18) series with the Buckeyes of Ohio State. Both games are slated to begin at 7:05 p.m. inside the BG Ice Arena.
