
Falcon Volleyball Advances to MAC Semifinals

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team made quick work of the Ball State Cardinals for a 3-0 sweep in the MAC quarterfinals Friday afternoon. The Falcons hit .265 while limiting the BSU attack to a .042 hitting efficiency. The arch-rival Toledo Rockets pulled off an upset over #2 Northern Illinois in the tournament's first quarterfinal match, and will be the Falcons semifinals opponent.
Sophomore Chelsey Meek etched her name in the Falcon record books Friday as her 24 digs increased her season total to 502, the highest season total in BGSU history. The previous record of 497 digs was held by Meek's current teammate, Senior Chrissy Gothke.
Junior Stephanie Swiger led the way on the offensive side of the night, racking up 16 kills at a .353 pace. Sophomore Kendra Halm chipped in five blocks to lead the team.
It was a game of Falcon runs in the opener as BGSU strung together nine seperate runs of three or more points in the 30-11 victory. Swiger hit .444 (4-0-9), recorded two digs and also a block in the win.
Game two began with both teams exchanging points back and forth to force a 7-7 tie. The Cardinals then went on a 6-0 run and quieted the BGSU-dominated crowd. Head Coach Denise Van De Walle called a timeout to stop the momentum. Bowling Green made some adjustments and stormed back to knot the score once again, this time at 17-17. Swiger uppped her game to the next level, bringing the Brown and Orange back with eight terminatinos in game two alone. The Findlay, Ohio native finished off the 30-26 win by recording point number 30 with her 12th kill of the match.
Bowling Green then seized the first six points of game three, including three kills by Junior Madeline Means in the early goings. BGSU rolled to a 30-16 win by hitting a match-high .341 in the third game.
The Falcons advance to the MAC semifinals to play the Toledo Rockets at 5 PM Saturday (Nov. 18) at the SeaGate Centre in Toledo, Ohio.

Chrissy Gothke, Stephanie Swiger and Kendra Halm were all chosen as members of the All-MAC First Team. Madeline Means (2nd Team) and Corey Domek (All-Freshman) also joined them as All-MAC performers for the Brown andOrange.
