BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team finished as the Mid-American Conference Tournament Runner-Up after dropping a 3-0 decision to the Ohio Bobcats Sunday afternoon. The Falcons were defeated 30-19, 30-25, 30-21.
Ohio had too much fire power at the net for the Falcons, hitting .341 compared to Bowling Green's .129 hitting efficiency.
"We were mismatched at the net today," said Head Coach Denise Van De Walle. "Ohio is very physical up front, and it killed us."
Freshman Corey Domek led the Falcons with 10 kills while Sophomore Chelsey Meek chipped in 17 digs defensively. Senior Chrissy Gothke played well in her last match, hitting .400 with eight kills, 31 assists and 14 digs.
"Chrissy (Gothke) was not the reason we lost today, that's for sure," said Van De Walle. "She did everything well today and did her job. The problem was her supporting cast did not."
Gothke, along with her fellow member of the '03 recruiting class Redshirt Junior Corrie Mills, were named to the All-Tournament team.
OU seized the first four points points of the match and did not trail the remainder of game one. Bobcat setter Savanah Parra controlled the opening game with 19 assists in Ohio's 30-19 win.
Bowling Green slowed Ohio's attack in game two, limiting the Bobcats to a .233 pace. Junior Madeline Means was the workhorse for the Falcons in the second stanza, swinging 18 attack attempts. A kill by Domek skimmed the Falcon deficit to just two points at 26-24. Unfortunately, the Bobcats snatched the next four points however, eventually taking a 30-25 win.
The Falcons fell behind early in game three as the Bobcats hit at a .429 pace. BGSU made several runs to get back into the match, but the hole they dug proved to be too deep at the Bobcats prevailed with a 30-21 victory.
