BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University dropped a 3-1 decision Friday night inside the BG Ice Arena to the Lakers of Lake Superior. The loss, which was the Falcons first at home, drops the Orange and Brown to 2-4-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
"I thought it was a tough game for us to play and not get anything out of it," said BGSU head coach Scott Paluch. "It's obvious that we're having a tough time scoring goals against some pretty good goalies. I thought he [Jakaitis] made some key saves in the second period to keep it 2-1 and a few in the third."
The downfall of the contest was special teams as the Lakers converted on two of their six power-play opportunities, while the Falcons went 0-for-3, despite generating 10 shots with the man advantage, compared to just seven for LSSU.
LSSU (5-2-1, 0-3-0) got on the board early with the first of their two power-play goals at the 7:33 mark of the first with a goal by Nathan Perkovich.
The Falcons answered back three minutes later with a goal by sophomore assistant captain Brandon Svendsen. Freshman James Perkin threw a backhand towards the LSSU cage, while fellow classmate Kai Kantola deflected the Perkin shot onto the stick of Svendsen who slammed home the puck for a 1-1 tie.
The Lakers added an even-strength goal at the 11:11 mark of the second period and their second power-play goal of the game at the 17:20 mark of the third to stretch the lead to 3-1.
Both freshman Eddie Neville and senior Jeff Jakaitis exchanged saves throughout the night, several spectacular ones, with Neville recording 29 saves and Jakaitis stopping 34, picking up the first star of the game.
BGSU out-shot the Lakers 35-32 on the night.
These same two teams will do it again tomorrow night at 7:05 inside the Ice Arena.
