BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - UNO's Bryan Marshall scored three first period goals, two of them power-play tallies, en route to a 4-1 win over the Bowling Green State University hockey team Friday night. The Falcons' Kai Kantola recorded the Orange and Brown's lone goal of the night.
"First and foremost, I like the effort put forth in terms of a lot of guys playing through some injuries," said BGSU head coach Scott Paluch. "I really like the effort and enthusiasm. I just think ultimately we took too many penalties against a really good offensive hockey team."
Marshall, who became the Mavs first-ever player to post three goals in a period, scored at the 12:13(PP), 17:31(PP) and 19:04 mark of the first period. Brandon Scero added assists on both power-play goals.
Tomas Klempa stretched the UNO lead to 4-0 with their third power-play goal of the night at the 12:00 mark of the second period.
The Orange and Brown got as close as 4-1 when freshman Kai Kantola scored his second goal of the year, both coming with the man advantage. With several members from both teams directly in front of the UNO cage, Kantola was able to muscle the puck past UNO's Jeremie Dupont. Junior Mike Nesdill and freshman Todd McIlrath assisted on the goal.
On the night BGSU went 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Mavericks went 3-for-9.
Sophomore Jimmy Spratt made 31 saves in the loss. Dupont blocked 24 shots in the win.
The Falcons and Mavs will do it again tomorrow night inside the Ice Arena. Opening face off is 7:05 p.m.
