COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision Friday night to the RedHawks of Miami in game one of the Ohio Hockey Classic held inside Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. It is the second time this season the Falcons dropped a one goal game to Miami.
Despite out-shooting the RedHawks 13-4 in the opening 20 minutes, the Falcons trailed 1-0 off a Mary Guerin power-play goal at the 3:40 mark.
BGSU (4-14-1) evened the score at one apiece at the 4:22 mark of the second period off the stick of James Unger, his first goal of the season. A partial clear by Miami came to Falcon netminder Jimmy Spratt, who caught the RedHawks in a line-change with an up-ice pass to Michael Hodgson. The junior captain fed the puck forward to Unger who wristed a shot over the glove-hand of Charlie Effinger as the BGSU power play came to a close. The Spratt assist was the first of his career.
MU (15-5-1) once again regained the one goal advantage as Justin Mercier deflected a Nino Musitelli pass behind Spratt six minutes later.
Brian Kaufman extended the RedHawk lead to 3-1 on a breakaway goal that he slipped between the pads of Spratt at the 7:14 mark of the final period.
Junior assistant captain Jonathan Matsumoto added his seventh goal of the season with just 29 seconds remaining, as BGSU head coach Scott Paluch pulled Spratt for the extra attacker while the Falcons were also on the power play. Sophomore Tim Maxwell added an assist on the goal.
On the night BGSU held a 26-22 shot advantage, and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Miami was 1-for-7 with the man-advantage.
BGSU will play again tomorrow night inside Nationwide Arena, but the opponent and time is yet to be determined. The Falcons will play the loser of the Ohio State/Minnesota Duluth contest. If Ohio State loses, the Falcons play at 8:05 p.m., but if Minnesota falls, BGSU and the Bulldogs will play at 5:05p.m., meaning that the consolation game could follow the championship contest. Ohio State is guaranteed to play at 8:05 p.m.
