MUNCIE, Ind. - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team took third Friday night in Muncie, Ind., against Ball State University and Michigan State University. MSU would capture the victory with a team score of 191.025, BSU would finish second with a score of 187.875, and BGSU would finish third with a score of 183.625.
Posting the only Top Five finish for the Orange and Brown was junior Bethany Kenel. Kenel has led the team all season with two first-place finishes on the beam, and tonight posted a second-place finish with a score of 9.625.
"Bethany did a great job for us tonight. On a night that she had to watch her other teammates struggle, she stepped it up and landed a solid routine," said head coach Dan Connelly.
Junior Allison Swafford would also help lead the team as she had two Top-10 finishes on the vault and floor. On the vault Swafford would twist her way to a 9.550 and a sixth-place finish. She would later tumble her way to a 9.375 and a 10th-place finish on the floor.
In her first all-around performance on the year Jillian Stranges would take two Top-10 finishes on vault, and beam. With a score of 9.450 on vault Stranges would finish 10th, and a beam score of 9.200 placed her eighth in that event.
Other Falcons breaking the Top-10 included Jayme Stambaugh on vault with a score of 9.525, while Jessica McArthur and Jenna Wirtanen would both tie for ninth on bars to lead BGSU. The beam would see Jessica Guyer's best performance on the night with a score of 9.225 and a seventh-place finish.
The Falcons will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., next Sunday at 1:00 p.m. where they will take to the mats against MAC opponent Western Michigan. "We are going to have to regroup and focus for what lies ahead," said Connelly.
