CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University softball standout Gina Rango has been named a Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Feb. 27). Rango earns the honor for the third time in her BGSU career.
Rango, the 2005 MAC Player of the Year, picked up right where she left off. A native of North Lima, Ohio (Boardman H.S.), the senior hit a team-high .556 last weekend as the Falcons were a perfect 6-0 in the Panera Bread Challenge, hosted by Chattanooga.
Rango had 10 hits in 18 at-bats, with a pair of three-hit games and two two-hit games. She was 3-for-4 with a double and a homerun in the season-opening win over Virginia Friday (Feb. 24). Two days later, Rango had another three-hit game, with two of those hits leaving the yard.
Rango's two-HR game vs. the Blazers tied the school single-game record, a record which she already shared. With three homers this season, she has already topped her total for all of last spring.
On the weekend, Rango had a slugging percentage of 1.222, with five extra-base hits (one double, one triple and the three homers) among her 10 safeties.
Rango was named the Player of the Week in the East Division. Kent State's Britteny Robinson was named the division's pitcher of the week, while Western Michigan's Kristi Strange and Northern Illinois' Lindsey LaChiana earned Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Week honors, respectively, for the West Division.
The Falcons' 6-0 start is the best in school history. That start will be put to the test this weekend, as BGSU heads to Waco, Texas, for the Compass Bank Invitational Friday through Sunday (March 3-5). The Brown and Orange will play two games each vs. Mississippi State, Washington and host Baylor.
