CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University senior softball standout Liz Vrabel has been named the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon (April 19). Vrabel earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Vrabel, a native of Allison Park, Pa. (North Allegheny HS), was 3-0 with a perfect 0.00 earned run average last week. She did not allow a run in four appearances, covering 17 1/3 innings pitched, on the week. On Monday, Vrabel was named the MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season and the ninth time in her storied Falcon career.
Vrabel fired a complete-game, two-hit shutout in Friday's opener at Ball State, tying the school record for career shutouts (includes complete-game and combined) in a 4-0 Falcon win. Then, in the nightcap, she threw three innings of scoreless, two-hit ball in another win that broke that record, as the BG pitching staff combined for another shutout in a 7-0 victory over the Cards.
On Saturday, Vrabel needed just one pitch to get an out in a brief relief stint at Miami. She capped her week with a four-hit shutout in Sunday's win over the RedHawks, in a 10-0 win.
On the week, Vrabel allowed opponents to hit just .133 against her, giving up only eight hits in those 17-plus innings. She walked just two batters and struck out 12.
Following Tuesday's doubleheader sweep of visiting Oakland, Vrabel is now 14-8 with an ERA of 1.50, 147 strikeouts and an opponent BA of .179. In MAC action, she is 4-2 with a 1.45 ERA.
Vrabel, a marketing major, currently maintains a cumulative grade-point average of 3.16.
The Falcons are 28-16, and BGSU leads the MAC's East Division with a 9-3 league mark heading into the weekend. BG will host Central Michigan in a Friday (April 21) twinbill at the BGSU Softball Field, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Then, the Brown and Orange will play single games against Eastern Michigan on Saturday and Sunday (April 22-23).
