BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Falcon volleyball has ripped off eight consecutive wins, including a 3-0 sweep over Ball State Saturday afternoon. It had been 14 years since Bowling Green had defeated the Cardinals inside Anderson Arena until Saturday's dominating performance.
Bowling Green's explosive offense continued its form, blasting 52 kills with a .328 team hitting percentage. Junior Stephanie Swiger, last week's MAC East Player of the Week, paced the Brown and Orange with 18 kills on 32 attempts with just two errors (.500). Sophomore Kendra Halm recorded seven blocks for the second night in a row.
The Falcons struggled for the first half of game one, but once the offensive attack revved it up it was nearly unstoppable the rest of the match. Swiger and Junior Madeline Means combined for 10 kills with no errors in the 30-22 game-one win. Means excelled defensively as well, compiling eights digs in the opener.
Ball State bounced back by taking a 13-11 lead in game two. However, Halm followed with a kill that ignited the Falcons for a 19-5 run resulting in a 30-18 win. Halm and Junior Corrie Mills teamed up for two of their seven blocks apiece in the second game.
Just when you thought the Falcons couldn't be any more efficient, they hit .419 while holding BSU to .043 in the game-three clincher. Back-to-back kills by Freshman Corey Domek sealed the deal for Bowling Green.
BGSU rides their eight-match winning streak into Wednesday night's home match against MAC East foe Miami. The Falcons and RedHawks are scheduled to begin at 7 PM.
Quotes from Head Coach Denise Van De Walle
"This afternoon was another great performance at the net. Our middles tore it up again. Swiger and Kendra (Halm) combined for over half our kills today just like last night. I think that's impressive since we were playing against a team with the top defensive player in the MAC, Amanda McCormick. We knew she would dig a ton of balls, so to hit that high with her on the floor is really good."
"Defensively, we had some great rallies. Madeline (Means), Chrissy (Gothke), Chelsey (Meek), and (Maggie) Karges all made it to double-digit digs today and that's exactly what we needed against a team that likes to swing."
"Beating Ball State last year at their place snapped a 13-year losing streak...beating them here snapped a 14 year old one. We beat a team that was predicted to win their division. This is a great win for us. We're playing really well right now. We look good."
