
Falcons Soar Past the Cardinals

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - BGSU Head Coach Denise Van De Walle and the Falcons swept Van De Walle's alma mater, Ball State (36-34, 30-14, 30-24). The Falcons extended their winning streak to seven matches with the victory over the Cardinals. The Falcons once again controlled the net on offense hitting a .209 compared to the Cardinals .042.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 6-1 lead over the Falcons. The Falcons battled back and put together two three point runs coming within one of the Cardinals, 9-8. The Cardinals continued to hold the lead until the Falcons strung together a four point run giving BGSU their first lead of the night 17-16. The Falcons continued to fire away at the Cardinals and after another four point run the Falcons extended their lead to four over the Cardinals, 22-18. The Cardinals continued to fight back putting together a three point run to tie game one up, 25-25. With the score tied up 28-28 the Falcons secured game point off of a Stephanie Swiger kill but the Cardinals sided out right away to tie the game up once again 29-29. Game one continued to go back and forth until the Falcons sided out off of a Meghan Mohr kill to tie the game up 34-34. The Falcons then scored two points in a row off of a Madeline Means kill and a Maggie Karges service ace to win game one, 36-34.
Game two was not as close as game one with the Falcons taking an early 10-5 lead over the Cardinals after a five point Falcon run. The Cardinals answered back right away with a four point run to come within one of the Falcons 10-9. The Falcons extended their lead with two big runs. The first was a seven point run with Swiger at the serving line followed by an eight point Falcon run with Sam Fish at the serving line. The Falcons finished off game two with a kill from Means winning, 30-14. The Falcons scored 16 of the last 20 points in game two hitting their best all night with 14 kills and only two errors hitting a .353 and kept the Cardinals to hitting a -.044 with only eight kills.
The Cardinals took an early lead, 4-1 once again in game three after a four point run. The Falcons answered back once again with a three point run to tie game three up 4-4. The game went back and forth with neither team able to score more than two points in a row until the Cardinals put together a three point run which was matched by the Falcons three point giving the Falcons an 18-16 lead over the Cardinals. The Falcons were able to extend their lead to five 23-18 after a four point Falcon run. The Cardinals tried to come back mounting a four point run that was stop by a double block from Kendra Halm and Mohr. The Falcons finished off game three with a four point run with Chelsey Meek back at the serving line.
Leading the Falcons on offense against the Cardinals was Halm with 13 kills and only two errors hitting a .407 for the night. Also in double digits for the Falcons was Corey Domek with 12 kills and only two errors hitting a .500. Distributing the ball on offense for the Falcons was Fish who collected 37 assists.
The Falcons had two players in double digits on defense with Meek picking up 16 digs and Means with 15 digs.
Karges had a milestone night picking up her 1,000th dig in game two against the Cardinals. Karges recorded six digs in the win over the Cardinals and has amassed 1,003 career digs averaging a career 2.45 digs per game.
