
Falcons Finish Regular Season With a Victory

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons finished their regular season campaign with a three game sweep over Akron (30-24, 30-29, 30-28) for the second time this season. The victory over the Zips gave the Falcons their second straight season of 20 plus wins and fourth consecutive winning season. Tonight's victory was momentous for one Falcon in particular as junior Chelsey Meek broke the all-time BGSU record for career digs set by Susie Norris in 2003. Meek recorded her 1,597th career dig in game three of the match.
The Falcons came out firing as they took the first point of the game off of a kill from Meghan Mohr. The Falcons took an early 10-3 lead after a running off five points with Mohr at the serving line which included two kills from Madeline Means and a kill from Corrie Mills. The Zips answered back with a three point run, which was ended by a kill from Stephanie Swiger giving the Falcons an 11-6 lead over the Zips. The Falcons extended their lead to seven 17-10 after stringing together four points. Once again the Zips countered with their own four point run to bring them within three of the Falcons 17-14. The Falcons continued to stay aggressive and put together a five point run to maintain their lead, 25-20. The Falcons finished off the Zips in game one, 30-24 off of a kill from Swiger. The Falcons hit their best all night in game one with 22 kills hitting a .300 and kept the Zips to a mere 15 kills hitting a .178.
The Orange and Brown came out with the same intensity taking the first point in game two as MAC East Player of the Week, Kendra Halm terminated ball for a kill. The Falcons then went on a four point run to take an early 4-0 lead over the Zips. The Falcons continued to fire away at the Zips scoring points in a row. A kill by Corey Domek led to a Falcon three point run and the Falcons taking an 18-10 lead. The Zips tried to rally back putting together four points but Means ended the Akron run with a kill and then went on to record a service ace in the Falcons three point run. The Zips were finally able to side out but the Falcons came right back with a five point rally to secure game point and an 11 point lead 29-18. The Zips were able to fight off one Falcon game point but a kill from Domek ended game two, 30-19. The Falcons out scored the Zips at the end of game two scoring eight of the last 10 points, which included four kills from Domek, a kill from Halm, and a service ace from Means. The Falcons once again out hit the Zips recording 17 kills hitting a .267 compared to the Zips 12 kill hitting a .205.
Game there was much closer between the two teams as the Zips came out right away scoring the first five points of game three to take a 5-0 lead over the Falcons. The Falcons came back with three straight points to come within two of the Zips 4-6. The Zips extended their lead as the put together a three point run once again taking a five point lead over the Falcons 13-8. However, the Falcons came right back with their own four point run to cut the Zips lead to one, 13-12. The Falcons were able to side out right away and score points in row back-to-back taking their first lead of game three 17-15 over the Zips. The Zips continued to fight and strung together four points to recapture the lead 22-21. A kill from Halm evened the game up 22-22. The rest of game three was a battle back and forth between the two teams. With the Falcons down by one Domek connected with Mohr for a kill to tie the game up 28-28. The Falcons scored the next two points of the game and finished off the Zips with a solo block from Halm winning 30-28.
The Falcons extended their winnings streak over the Zips to eight matches in their second sweep over Akron this season. Once again the match against the Zips was a milestone night for one of the Falcons as Meek became the top digger in BGSU history as she recorded her 1,597th career dig in game three. Meek now holds the record for digs in season with 612 digs this season, the record for digs per game in a season with 5.61 digs per game this season, and the record for career digs with 1,607 career digs. Meek broke all of the record this season and is continuing to set new highs as the season continues. Meek is only the second player in BGSU history to hold all of the records for digs.
Meek led the defensive charge once again with 25 digs followed by Means with 12 digs.
The Falcons' were firing on all cylinders with all of their front row players contributing on offense. Leading the offensive strike was Domek with 14 kills hitting a .268. Halm once again put up big numbers recording her ninth straight double-digit kill performance recording 12 kills hitting a .296. Also in double-digits for the Falcon was Mohr with 11 kills and 14 assists recording her ninth double-double of the season. Fish distributed 33 assists on offense.
The Falcons finished their 2007 campaign 21-9 overall and 12-4 in the MAC now look to prepare for the MAC Tournament. The Falcons #4 seed in the MAC Tournament will play the winner of Kent State #5 seed and Buffalo #12 seed on Friday, Nov. 16 at the SeaGate Centre.
