MADISON, Wis. - Two late-second period goals would help lift the 13th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers to a ,5-3, victory on Saturday night over the 19th-ranked Bowling Green State University hockey team in the consolation game of the 2007 Badger Hockey Showdown. The third-place tilt was held at the Kohl Center on the UW campus.
With the win, UW improved to 8-7-3 on the year, while dropping BG to 8-8-0.
Five different players found the scoring sheet for the Falcons on the night, while freshman goaltender Nick Eno stopped 24-of-29 Badger shots.
The loss was the fourth-straight for the Falcons who now fall to 3-5-0 all-time in the Badger Hockey Showdown.
UW got the scoring started just 4:04 into the game when Michael Davies knocked home a rebound on Eno's left side to give the Badgers the early advantage. Ben Street's initial shot on net from the lower left-wing circle hit Eno's left pad, sitting in the perfect spot for Davies to stick it past him just inside the right-wing post to give UW the 1-0 lead.
The Badgers would add to that lead just over seven minutes later then when forward Tom Gorowsky tipped in a pass from defenseman Cody Goloubef. Goloubef's pass from the right side of the slot found Gorowsky's stick just inside the left side of the crease as he tipped it past Eno to give the Badgers a two-goal cushion
The two-goal advantage wouldn't last long though as BG used its' third-ranked power play to get them back in the game at the 13:36 mark. Freshman forward David Solway netted his third power-play goal of the season on a shot from the right side of the slot as the Falcons trimmed the Badgers' lead to 2-1. For Solway, a native of Green Bay, Wis., it was his second goal of the weekend in his return home to the cheese state. Adding assists on the play would be James Perkin and Mike Nesdill.
BG got big play from Eno throughout the first two periods as he made eight first period saves and followed that up with 10 in the second.
Eno's effort would allow for the Falcons to knot the game's score up at, 2-2, at the 3:17 mark of the second. Forward Brandon Svendsen tallied his first goal of the season when his shot from the right circle hit Goloubef and re-directed into the net past UW goaltender Shane Connelly.
Svendsen's marker brought to an end the streak of eight-straight goals scored by BG's freshmen class, who had accounted for 10 of the Falcons last 14 goals prior to the goal.
The Falcons would hang tough with the Badgers till the 13:03 mark of the second stanza, killing off a 5-on-3 power play towards the midway point of the period. However, two quick strikes from the Badgers would shift the game's momentum towards the UW side.
The first would come from Gorowsky at the 13:03 mark, while Street added the second just 2:08 later to increase the Badgers' lead to 4-2 heading into the second intermission.
Matt Ford then gave UW a 5-2 lead just 1:31 into the third on a back-hand from the left side of the crease.
BG wouldn't quit though despite the three-goal margin. Freshman forward Dan Sexton tallied his fifth goal of the season and second of the weekend on a short-handed marker from just inside the left circle to bring the score to, 5-3.
That would be as close as the Falcons would get though as despite some quality chances down the stretch they would be unable to find the scorer's sheet.
Connelly finished the game with 23 saves on 26 BG shots as the Badgers held a 29-26 advantage in shots on net in the contest.
BG finished 1-for-3 with the man-advantage, while the Badgers finished 0-for-4.
The Falcons will return to action next weekend (Jan. 4-5) when they get back into Central Collegiate Hockey Association action against top-ranked Miami University. Game one of the two-game home set for BG will start on Friday with a 7:05 p.m. faceoff. Game two between the Falcons and RedHawks will then take place at 7:35 p.m. with both contests being played at the BGSU Ice Arena. The games can be heard on WBGU 88.1 FM with Danny Nieves bringing you all the play-by-play.
