BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team jumped out to a 3-1 lead in their season opener at Middle Tennessee State before eventually suffering the loss, 11-4. It was the first ever meeting between the two universities.
With the bases loaded in the top of the second, Sophomore Chris Gacom line drived a pitch into center field, picking up the sacrifice fly as Senior Jeff Telmanik trotted in from third base to give the first run of the game.
After the Blue Raiders evened the score at 1-1 in the fourth, Bowling Green regained their lead when Senior Josh Dietz belted a pitch off the wall in deep center field for an RBI-double, scoring Senior Kurt Wells.
Wells increased the Falcon lead to 3-1 with an RBI-single into center field the following inning that pushed Sophomore Greg Feldkamp across home pleate. Gacom recorded a single earlier in the inning to advance the run-scoring Feldkamp to third base.
Senior Tyler Johnson got the nod as starter and allowed a lone run with three strikeouts in four innings pitched. Unfortunately, MTSU began the come back once the bullpen took over and scored 10 runs over the last four innings of the contest, including five homeruns. MTSU's Matt Ray hit two homeruns, one from each side of the plate.
Gacom picked up another hit and RBI off a double into left-center field in the eighth inning for the Falcons fourth run. Freshman Mark Galvin recorded a pinch-hit single in his first collegiate at bat.
