Spartans Down BGSU, 6-1, to Halt Falcons' Four-Match Winning Streak

EAST LANSING, Mich. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team saw a four-match winning streak come to an end Saturday (Feb. 24), as the Falcons fell to Michigan State University by a 6-1 count. The non-conference dual match was held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 8-1 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 5-4.
BGSU is scheduled to return to action Sunday afternoon (Feb. 25), taking on Butler University at 3:00 p.m. at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
The Spartans opened the match by winning all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. The closest of the three contests came at the top flight, where junior Jenna Nussbaum and sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin were narrowly defeated by Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler, 8-6.
In singles play, the hosts won five of the six matches to take the overall dual win. Nussbaum picked up BGSU's lone win, over MSU's Pascale Schnitzer at the third flight. The Falcon junior won the first set, 6-3, then saw Schnitzer rally back for a second-set win to force a tiebreaker. But, Nussbaum was up to the challenge, with a 10-7 victory in the breaker.
Soph Stefanie Menoff saw her sixth-flight match go to a tiebreaker after she and Marianne Eelens split their two sets, but Eelens was able to win the tiebreaker, 10-5.
Senior Ashley Jakupcin lost to Bader at the top flight, although the Falcon senior forced an opening-set tiebreaker on Saturday afternoon.
