BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team began a late-inning rally, but fell short in an 11-7 loss at Ball State. The game was a non-conference matchup with the Cardinals as part of the Ball State Invitational.
Bowling Green dug themselves themselves a six-run hole after allowing a half dozen runs in the first three innings. The Falcons then strung together three conscutive innings with at least one run for a total of four scores. Unfortunately, the Cardinals notched four runs of their own during that same three-inning stretch to maintain the six-run lead at 10-4. Ball State added an eleventh run in the bottom of the seventh inning as well.
The Brown and Orange roughed up BSU's relief pitcher in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Andrew Foster increased his team-high .378 season batting average with a single to open up the inning. Senior Mike Barnard drew a walk next to put two runners aboard. A fielding error by Ball State then allowed Foster to score from second base while Barnard sprinted over to third. Senior Kurt Wells sent the next pitch into center field for a sacrifice fly. BGSU added a third run before a strikeout ended the rally. A "1-2-3" ninth inning ended the Falcon comeback and dropped their season record to 9-7.
Bowling Green will return home this week for a five-game homestand including mid-week games against Youngstown State (Tues.) and Oakland (Wed.), followed by the MAC opening series versus Eastern Michigan. BGSU is 1-0 at Warren E. Steller Field in 2007 after a 9-8 thriller over Findlay last week.
