BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team will open the Mid-American Conference season, and the Falcons also hope to open the outdoor portion of the spring-season home schedule this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will head to Northern Illinois University for a Saturday (March 24) match, before returning home for a Sunday (March 25) dual vs. Ferris State University.

Sunday's match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus. In the event of inclement weather, the match will still begin at 1:00 p.m., but at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in the Toledo area.
For the Falcons, Saturday's match at NIU is a homecoming of sorts for nearly half of the team. Four of the nine players on the 2006-07 BGSU roster hail from the state of Illinois, including junior Jenna Nussbaum (Glenview, Ill.), sophomore Stefanie Menoff (Naperville, Ill.) and freshmen Katia Babina (Glenview, Ill.) and Samantha Kintzel (Libertyville, Ill.).
The Falcons are 7-4 in dual matches this season, heading into Saturday's MAC opener. BGSU has won two consecutive matches, including last Sunday's (March 18) 7-0 win over Wright State at Shadow Valley. BGSU showed no signs of rust in that match, after a three-week layoff.
Northern Illinois will bring a 4-4 overall mark into Saturday's BGSU match, and the Huskies are 0-1 in MAC action after a 7-0 loss to Western Michigan Friday (March 23). That match was moved indoors due to rain.
Ferris State has an overall dual-match record of 11-6 and a mark of 7-2 in GLIAC play, heading into a Saturday match at Toledo.
Senior Ashley Jakupcin enters the weekend with a career total of 119 overall wins, ranking her 13th in school history. She has 70 career singles victories, placing her ninth in BG annals. The school's career record is 79 singles wins, held by Deidee Bissinger (1997-2000) and Julie Weisblatt (1994-97).
Jakupcin is tied for 16th in school history with 49 doubles wins as a Falcon. She is BG's active career leader in singles, doubles and overall wins.
This season, Menoff continues to lead the Falcons with 26 overall victories. The sophomore is an impressive 15-2 in singles play and is 26-9 overall. Kintzel is right behind with 24 total wins, while sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin (21) and Nussbaum (20) each have at least 20 victories this year as well.
The Ferris State match is BG's final non-conference dual of the season. Following this weekend, the Falcons will play seven consecutive MAC matches to conclude the regular season, beginning with next weekend's matches at Buffalo (March 30) and Akron (March 31).
