BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team was as hot as the unseasonable weather, winning at every singles flight en route to a 7-0 victory over Ferris State University Sunday afternoon (March 25). The non-conference dual match was held at BGSU's Keefe Courts.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-4 on the season. BGSU has won four-straight matches and eight of the last nine duals.
On a day that seemed more like early May than late March in Northeast Ohio, the Falcons won doubles matches at the bottom two flights to capture the day's initial point. Freshman Katia Babina and junior Andrea Volle teamed up for a win at the second flight, while freshman Samantha Kintzel and sophomore Stefanie Menoff were winners at the third level, with both tandems winning by 8-2 scores.
When singles play began, the Falcons kept rolling along like the BG warriors they are. Senior Ashley Jakupcin lost a total of just five games in her win over Molly Basha at the top flight, while Kintzel dropped only two games in a second-flight triumph over Marissa Muchow.
Soph Kelsey Jakupcin was a winner at the third flight, topping FSU's Jenna O'Dell by identical 6-2 scores. Junior Jenna Nussbaum lost her opening set at the fourth flight by a narrow 7-6 result, but battled back to win the second set and then a tiebreaker against Allison Halbert.
Volle and Menoff completed the sweep at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively. Volle topped Ann Grant by a 6-3, 6-3 result, while Menoff allowed Katie Perdue to win only one game in her dominant performance at the sixth flight.
Sunday's match marked BGSU's first spring dual at Keefe Courts, and also was the final non-conference dual of the 2006-07 campaign. From here on out, it's all Mid-American Conference, all the time, beginning with a pair of road matches next weekend. The Brown and Orange will take on Buffalo on Friday (March 30) before heading to Akron for a Saturday match (March 31). Both duals are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
