TOLEDO, Ohio - After winning nine consecutive contests over the arch-rival Toledo Rockets, Bowling Green has now dropped two in a row with a 7-2 defeat Sunday afternoon at Toledo. UT snatched a 7-2 win Saturday as well. Snow fall Saturday night caused a two-hour delay Sunday, first pitch was originally scheduled for 1 PM, but was knocked back to 3 PM.
Toledo's Ryan France and Joe Robers combined for a one-hitter in the rubber match. Sophomore Marty Baird sent a pitch right back up in the middle for a single in the Falcons' two-run fourth inning.
Toledo's first of six fielding errors later allowed Baird to reach third base. Sophomore Chris Gacom provided Bowling Green's first score by laying down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Baird. A throwing error by the catcher allowed BGSU to score the second run of the inning.
Sophomore Dusty Hawk got himself out of a big jam in the home-half of the inning to ruin the Toledo scoring opportunity. With two outs and the bases loaded, Hawk got the Toledo batter to hit a fly ball which was easily snagged by Senior Kurt Wells in center field.
Bowling Green's defense finally allowed the Rockets to light the scoreboard in the sixth inning. A double by Josh Johnson plated two runs, knotting the score at 2-2. Johnson scored the go-ahead run on an RBI-single by the next batter. A perfectly-executed relay play later in the inning caught Johnson trying to run home as Wells fired a throw into the infield where Sophomore Ryan Shay hurled the relay an awaiting catcher and Johnson was tagged out easily.
The Falcon offense failed to score anymore runs while Toledo notched four more for the 7-2 final score.
BGSU gets back to action with five home games in six days, beginning with a 3 PM showdown against Dayton Tuesday afternoon.
