BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Visiting Eastern Michigan University captured wins at the top-four singles flights to eke out a 4-3 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday afternoon (April 20). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at sun-drenched Keefe Courts.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 12-9 overall and 4-3 in the MAC, while the Falcons drop to 12-7 and 4-3, respectively.
Eastern rallied back after dropping the doubles point to the Falcons. The Eagles won at the top doubles flight, but the Falcons got wins at the second and third levels to take the early 1-0 lead. The tandem of sophomore Stefanie Menoff and junior Andrea Volle picked up an 8-3 win at the middle flight, and the Falcons' third-flight team of freshman Samantha Kintzel and senior Ashley Jakupcin also earned a victory over their EMU foes, by an 8-1 outcome.
In singles play, however, the Eagles bounced back for the match victory. Nationally-ranked Vanessa Frankowski earned a win over Jakupcin at the top flight, while Eastern's Yana Parfenyuk downed soph Kelsey Jakupcin at the third level.
EMU's Catherina Bestehorn was a fourth-flight winner over Falcon freshman Katia Babina, but the Brown and Orange picked up wins at the fifth and sixth flights. Junior Jenna Nussbaum lost only five games in her straight-sets win over EMU's Emma Czarnecki at the fifth level, while Menoff continued her season-long hot streak with yet another win at the sixth flight. Menoff lost a total of only four games in a sixth-level victory over Joanna Woo.
With the match tied at 3-3, Eastern's Aditi Krishnan and Falcon freshman Samantha Kintzel battled to a third set, with Krishnan able to pull out the victory.
The Falcons will return to Keefe Courts on Saturday afternoon (April 21), closing the regular season with a 1:00 p.m. match vs. the arch-rival University of Toledo. The match will mark 'Senior Day' for the Falcons, as Ashley Jakupcin and Erica Wolfe will be recognized in pre-match ceremonies.
FALCON TENNIS NOTES
* The Falcons' loss to Eastern Michigan moves the two teams into a tie for fourth place, heading into the final day of the regular season ... EMU now owns the tiebreaker over the Brown and Orange by virtue of the head-to-head win.
* If the regular season ended today, BGSU would meet EMU in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Championships.
* EMU travels to face first-place Western Michigan on Saturday, while the Falcons host third-place UT ... a BGSU win over the Rockets and an EMU loss to WMU would give the Falcons the third seed for the conference championships.
* Wins by both BGSU and EMU on Saturday would create a three-way tie for third place in the final regular-season standings, as those outcomes would leave the Falcons, Eagles and Rockets with identical 5-3 records ... if such a scenario were to occur, each team would be 1-1 in head-to-head matches against the other two schools ... in such a case, Eastern would earn the third seed, with the Falcons fourth and the Rockets fifth ... the up-to-date MAC standings can be found at the bottom of the page.
* Eastern now leads BGSU, 25-9, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Eagles have won eight consecutive meetings over the Brown and Orange.
* Sophomore Stefanie Menoff increased her singles record to an out-of-this-world 23-2 on the season ... she has a career record of 41-10, and is a perfect 7-0 in MAC singles matches this year to date.
* Menoff has won nine consecutive singles matches, and 13 of her last 14 ... she has a 16-2 singles mark in dual-match play this spring.
* Menoff and junior Andrea Volle played as a doubles team for the first time in their respective Falcon careers on Friday, picking up an 8-3 win at the second flight.
* Friday's Falcon duo of senior Ashley Jakupcin and freshman Samantha Kintzel improved to 4-1, with all five of the tandem's matches coming at the third flight in MAC action.
