Bowling Green State University freshman John Powers captured his first career tournament crown this afternoon as he carded a 226 (76-79-71) to help lead the Falcons to a second-place finish at the UD Spring Invitational in Dayton, Ohio. The Falcons, who shot 936, trailed only Wisconsin-Green Bay (925) in the 54-hole event.
Powers opened the final round in a tie for eighth, six strokes behind the leaders, but his 71 on the final 18 holes of the contest secured a one-stroke victory, the first of his career. The Bowling Green, Ohio native is the first BGSU medalist since Heath Ziglar did it in 2004 at the Earl Yestingmeiser Invitational.
As a team, the Falcons fired a 306 on the final day of competition to climb two spots for their second place finish. The 306 was the second-best round on Tuesday afternoon.
Powers was not the only Falcon to shine at the UD Spring Invitational, as all five Falcons finished in the top-34 of the 70-player field.
Junior Trevor Spathelf finished in a tie for 16th, carding a 237 (84-74-79). Fellow classmate, Jace Walker opened with back-to-back 78's, while finishing in a tie for 27th (240).
Rounding out the top five were Matt Schneider (240, T-27th) and Andrew Ladwig (243, T-34th).
Up next for the Orange and Brown is a trip to Akron, Ohio for the Firestone Intercollegiate on April 28-29.
That will be the final tune-up prior to the 2007 Mid-American Conference Championships at the Medallion Club in Westerville, Ohio. The tournament, which is from May 3-5, is hosted by BGSU.
