The Bowling Green State University men's golf team carded a 36-hole score of 596 (301-295) and sit in ninth-place at the 2007 Mid-American Conference Championships following day-one action. The championship, which is being hosted by BGSU, is being held at the Medallion Club in Westerville, Ohio.
Akron currently leads the nine-team field after a -13, 563, through 36 holes. Ball State (573), Kent State (574), Eastern Michigan (575) and Ohio (578) round out the top five.
Bowling Green (596), though in ninth-place are just six shots behind sixth-place Miami (590). Northern Illinois (591) and Toledo (593) sit in seventh and eighth.
The Falcons, who started five players that have never played in a MAC Championship at the Medallion Club, began the day with two juniors and three freshmen.
BGSU was led by freshman Matt Schneider, who began the day three-over after the first two holes, played the next 34 holes one-under par. Overall he shot 146 (76-70), tied for 20th in the 45-player field.
Three shots off of Schneider's pace was junior captain Jace Walker (149). The St. Thomas, Ontario native opened the tournament four over through four holes and played his final 14 holes one-under to finish round one with a 75. On his second round he improved by one shot, carding a 74. Walker is tie for 29th.
Freshman John Powers went 42-35=77 in his first ever round at a MAC Championship and shot 74 in round two, in which he was five-over on two holes. The Bowling Green, Ohio native is tie for 35th.
BGSU's third freshman Andrew Ladwig shot a team-best 73 in round one, but slipped a bit in his second round, firing an 80. Ladwig is in a tie for 39th.
Rounding out the Falcon lineup was junior Trevor Spathelf (82-77=159). He is currently in 43rd.
Round three begins at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning with the fourth and final round beginning at 8:00 a.m. Saturday.
